Annapurna - Mustang

Annapurna Round.

The trekking round the Annapurna's is a classic. In 2 or 3 weeks you walk around beautiful snow-capped mountains, circling peaks of 7500 meters up till more than 8000 meters tall.

You start from Kathmandu to Besisahar by bus. The first few days you walk through the rice fields and the citrus trees. Soon you will see the high, snow-capped mountains (Lamjung Himal and Annapurna III). After a week or so you get to Manang where you have a day off. From Manang you climb up to the Thorung La (la means pass) at 5416 meters. From the pass the view is superb: you look into the dry area of Mustang, you can see the mountains of Dolpo and also the Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri and all the Annapurna mountains.

Going down you reach into the arid terrain close to the Tibetan border. The influence of Tibet is very obvious here. You stay overnight at the pilgrimage town Muktinath.

In Jomsom the 15day trekkings ends. The 21day trekking follows the ancient salt route down. The landscape changes from arid and bare to lush and green.

The trekking ends at Nayapul where we catch a bus to the tropical Pokhara. You stay here one more night before you head back to Kathmandu by bus.

Annapurna Basse Camp.

This trekking leads through the area of the Buddhist Mangar and Gurung inhabitants. It goes past Machhapuchhare Base Camp to the end of the valley at Annapurna Base Camp. Here, in the cirque the view of the high mountains is overwhelming. You look up to Annapurna South (7200), Annapurna I (8061), Gangapurna (7450), Annapurna III (7550) and Machhapuchhare (6993).

You start in Kathmandu and travel by bus to Pokhara. Next morning you drive about one hour by taxi to Nayapul, where you start walking. From Nayapul it takes you 2 days to get to Poon Hill, a renowned viewpoint of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna I. The next days you follow a ridge to Tadapani where you run into the river Modi Khola. You follow the river up to Machhapuchhare Base Camp, where you take a left turn to your final destination, Annapurna Base Camp. You stay an extra day to enjoy the immense mountains, the glaciers and the ice and snow. After that you descend though the river gorge and walk through rice terraces and farming land to the village of Phedi. We take a taxi or bus to the inhabited world of tropical Pokhara at the shores of lake Phewa. After a day of rest in Pokhara you go back to Kathmandu by bus.

Ghorepani.

When your time is limited or you reckon a week of trekking is long enough for you, this trekking is very suitable. It gives a good impression of the Himalayas. This trip includes 6 days of hiking, between 2 and 6 hours a day.

You start in Kathmandu and travel by bus to Pokhara. Next morning you drive about one hour by taxi to Nayapul, where you start walking. It is a two days hike to Ghorepani. The climb can be steep but it is very rewarding. In the early morning you climb Poon Hill to watch the sunrise and the reflection of the sun on the tops of the snow-capped mountains of the Himalayas. After breakfast you leave Poon Hill behind and walk in a beautiful scenery and through the villages Tadepani, Landruk and Dhampus, ending in Phedi. From here you catch the bus to Pokhara at Phewa tal (lake). You stay overnight and the next day the bus will take you to Kathmandu.

Mohare Peak Trekking.

The Mohare Peak Trekking is a fairly new trekking route located in Annapurna's foothills. It is an alternative and quit route for the Ghorepani - Poonhill trek.

First day you drive to Pokhara and next day to Beni. After lunch you climb to Bans Kharka, where you will sleep in a homestay. The views of Himlung Himal and Dhaulagiri are amazing. The trek continues through forest (where, if you're lucky, you can see monkeys swinging in the trees), agricultural terraces and over high surfaces via Nangi to Mohare Danda (3300m). You can see one of the best panoramic views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. The morning sunrise in here is a must see!

From here it is only a two hours walk to Poonhill. The trek continues via Ghorepani to Deurali and Ghandruk. On the way you can see the impressive mountains Dhaulagiri, Annapurna and Machhapuchhare close by.

After one hour walk from Kimche the trek is completed. From here you can take the bus to Pokhara which is about one hour drive. Next day you will travel to Kathmandu by bus.

Annapurna Off The Beaten Trail.

Annapurna is a very popular trekking area and for a good reason: it is very beautiful! All aspects of Nepal can be found here. The people are friendly. The inhabitants are Buddhist and the Buddhist influence can be seen everywhere in the landscape. You walk from the subtropical agricultural terraces area, partly in deep gorges, to places without vegetation. Where stone and ice dominate and you are surrounded by mighty glaciers and mountains.

Crowded trails will be avoided during this hard tent trek. From Koto you leave the standard Annapurnatrail and walk north into valley of the villages Phu and Nar. The people in this area are closely related to the Tibetans, you can see this in their appearance as well as their dresses and houses. The villages of Phu and Naar have been isolated from the outside world for a long time. Because of that they are very pristine. This area was closed for foreign travellers until recently.

You leave the valley by the 5316 metres high Kang La and enter the Marsyandi Valley. After a steep descent you join the Annapurna Trail here. After a day of rest in Manang you leave the standard trail again and walk to highly situated Lake Tilicho. According to the Nepali this is the highest lake in the world (4925m) with a length of more than 4 kilometres. It is frozen for most of the year.

You climb 2 very remote passes above 5000 meter and descend to end of the trekking in Jomsom. From here you travel by bus to Pokhara and thereafter by bus to Kathmandu.

Mustang.

This trek goes to the extraordinary Mustang area with its ancient palaces, beautiful monasteries, medieval villages and the capital Lo Mantang. It is a very special place because this area was close for foreign travellers until 1990 and still it is not visited much, partly because of the pricey permit.

From Pokhara you fly to Jomsom and same day you walk to Kagbeni. The landscape is dry, fierce and fabulous beautiful with all kinds of brown and red colours. Although Mustang belonged to Tibet many centuries ago and nowadays is a part of Nepal, it is still a kingdom of its own with a king with its own rules and laws. In many respects it seems time stood still.

Via a number of passes of around 4000 meter you enter Lo Mantang. Here you have a restday and can visit the palace and some beautiful monasteries. From Lo Mantang you walk back to Lower Mustang through the place of pilgrimage Muktinath to Jomsom. Here you fly back to Pokhara next morning.
