Langtang - Gosainkunda - Helambu

Langtang (Gosainkunda, Helambu)

Langtang is a very popular trekking area in Nepal. For a reason: in a short period of time you get to the heart of the Himalayas and the trekking represents the diversity of Nepal. The Langtang area is close to Kathmandu which makes is relatively easily accessible.

The area has been badly damaged during the 2015 earthquake. After a period of grief people got to work and rebuild their accommodation. To support the people we really want tourists to visit this special area.

Both trekkings start in Langtang and the 15 day trekking continues to the lakes of Gosaïnkunda and the agricultural Helambu area. You stay overnight in the teahouses of the Tamang and Sherpa residents.

The three areas are very distinct: both cultural, ethnic and in scenery, each has its own charm.

You start by going to Syabru Bensi by jeep. Within a week you walk between the high snow-capped mountains with a view on the glaciers. At Kanjin Gompa you can climb a 5000 meter high peak. From Kanjin Gompa you descend to Thulo Syabru where the 10day and 15day trekking divide. The 10day trekking goes further down to Syabru Bensi and by bus to Kathmandu. The 15day trekking goes up to the holy lakes of Gosaïnkunda. These stark blue lakes, a site of pilgrimage for Hindus, are of fairylike beauty. From the lakes you continue climbing to the Laurebina La at 4600 meters. From here you have a wonderful view of the mountains of Langtang, Ganesh Himal and the Annapurna's. After crossing the pass you descend into the green Helambu area. You walk at an altitude of about 2000 meter, crossing various villages and farming terrain. The trekking finishes at Sundarijal at 1440 metres. Sundarijal is only 7 kilometres from Boudha, so it doesn't take long to get there.

Langtang off the beaten trail

Langtang is a very popular trekking area in Nepal. For a reason: in a short period of time you get to the heart of the Himalayas and the trekking represents the diversity of Nepal. The Langtang area is close to Kathmandu which makes is relatively easily accessible.

The area has been badly damaged during the 2015 earthquake. After a period of grief people got to work and rebuild their accommodation. To support the people we really want tourists to visit this special area.

This route is also known as "Langtang off the beaten trail" or "Tamang Heritage Trail". There are far less tourists on this trail than on the classic Langtang Trail. The path leads through Tamang villages, all with their own charm. When the skies are clear the view on the high mountains is suburb. You walk in forest and through agricultural areas, with some luck you see monkeys and wild pigs. You cross many rivers, which means you have to ascend and descend a lot. At Lama Hotel you join the main Langtang trail and walk back to Syabru Bensi, where the trek also started.
